There was no doubt United South Central’s first-year head wrestling coach Marcus Eytcheson was going to remember his first dual as a head coach for a long time, but Thursday’s meet with Blue Earth will be a little more memorable because of its unusual outcome.
The Rebels lost on the eighth criterion with the match tied 34-34. The eighth criteria is the team with the most first points scored and the Buccaneers had a 7-6 advantage.
The Rebels trailed 34-22 with two weights to go and needed to pinfall victories from A.J. Dreyer and Tony Willette to tie the dual. Dreyer and Willette did so — Dreyer pinned Jason Mertens in 12 seconds and Willette pinned Taylor Andrews at 4:32 to tie the match. But the was decided on which team scored the most first points in the dual and the Buccaneers held a 7-6 advantage. Willette had not scored any points before pinning his opponent.
“It was a heck of a dual to start with, but what do you do,” Eytcheson said.
Seventh-ranked Preston Staloch pinned Alvin Goraczkowski in his match at 152 pounds while Dylan Herman pinned Blue Earth’s Travis Hagedorn at 103 pounds.
The Rebels travel to Blue Earth Saturday for the Blue Earth Invitational.
