Tyson Foods Inc. said it’s moving some beef and pork production from its plant in Council Bluffs to Tennessee and Texas to be closer to the company’s growing customer base in the South.
The Springville, Ark.-based Tyson said Friday that part of the second-shift production will be suspended in mid-March. About 480 of the plant’s 1,300 workers will be laid off.
The plant produces steaks, roasts, chops and other items. Production will be moved to plants in Goodlettsville, Tenn., and Sherman, Texas.
Tyson spokesman Gary Sheneman said if enough additional business develops in the Midwest, the company will consider reinstating the production suspended in Council Bluffs.
