The memory of a disappoint loss to Faribault at home Jan. 26 burnt fresh in the minds of the Albert Lea girls’ basketball team and the Tigers made up for it in a big way Friday with a 72-58 victory over the Falcons at Faribault.

Abbey Arends continued her torrid stretch by scoring a school-record 37 points against the Falcons and Albert Lea (9-10, 7-6 Big Nine) put up 42 points in the second half for its first quality victory of the season.

Faribault (10-9, 9-5 Big Nine) posted a 17-point victory against the Tigers on Jan. 26 in a game where Albert Lea head coach Sean Gillam said the Falcons wanted more than the Tigers.

“I felt like Faribault outworked us last time and put a level of intensity out there that we just didn’t match,” Gillam said.

Albert Lea left no doubt as to which team wanted Friday’s game more, especially Arends.

Arends shot 12 of 20 from the field and hit 12 of 14 shots from the free throw line as she posted her second consecutive game with 30 or more points and the Tigers beat an opponent with a record above .500 for just the second time this season.

“Abbey brought a little extra tonight,” Gillam said.

Arends scored 30 last Thursday in an 11-point victory against Mankato West and elevated her game once again.

Albert Lea held just a one-point lead at halftime and broke the game open in the second half.

Morgan Stadheim added 14 points for the Tigers, who won their second consecutive game. Albert Lea has won back-to-back games just three times this season.

The Tigers play Owatonna Monday in Albert Lea.
