Barrow, toy shows, fishing contest, hockey: all ahead

It may be February, but there’s no excuse for the doldrums. Check out what’s going on this weekend. There’s something for everybody — from hogs to fish, hockey to toys and plenty of fundraiser meals to go around.

Friday, Feb. 5

The 66th Minnesota State Spring Barrow Show will be held at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds starting at 8 a.m. with the judging of junior pens of three and ending with the selection of the sweepstakes winner at 4 p.m. Admission for spectators is free. The Conger 4-H Club will staff the concession stand.

The Albert Lea Art Center’s All-Member Show will be open from noon to 4 p.m.

The Albert Lea Thunder will play Alexandria at 7:30 p.m. at City Arena.

Saturday, Feb. 6

The fourth annual Albert Lea Hockey Day will be held at City Arena beginning at 8 a.m. There will be skills competitions in the morning with games to follow until 8:30 p.m. Tailgating will start at 11:30 a.m. with a bratwurst and pop available for $4. Concessions will be available. There will also be a raffle with a drawing at 5 p.m. for cash prizes, a 50-inch plasma television and more. Tickets are $10 each and available at City Arena.

The 20th annual Tiger City Farm Toy Truck & Collectibles Show will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Northbridge Mall.

 The Albert Lea Art Center’s All-Member Show will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Albert Lea Daybreakers Kiwanis Club will hold a scholarship fish fry fundraiser at the American Legion Club from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Sunday, Feb. 7

The Full Draw Archery Club and Youth Program will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Albert Lea American Legion Club. Cost is $6 per person. Children 5 years and younger eat free.

The Albert Lea Eagles Club will hold a pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Pack 11 Cub Scouts will commemorate 100 years of Scouting at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Alden. Pack members will be assisting in the service and serving French toast, ham and scrambled eggs for breakfast from 9 a.m. to noon in Luther Hall for a donation. There will also be a bake sale.

The Fountain Lake Sportsmen’s Club will hold an ice fishing contest from noon to 2 p.m. near City Beach on Fountain Lake.

Dell Lutheran Church in Frost will hold its 28th annual lutefisk supper from 1 to 6 p.m. Lutefisk, potatoes, klub, corn, Norwegian meatballs, romegrot, lefsa, kringla, Norwegian rice, homemade buns and rosettes will be served. Cost is $14 for adults and $3.50 for children under 10. There will also be a bake sale, sponsored by Dell Women.
