California dreaming on a such a winter’s day

It seems many people I know are taking off for a warmer climate. A family member recently texted me from Hawaii. I had another e-mail from a friend that is wintering in Texas. As I write this column another friend is leaving for Texas and someone else I know left for Arizona this morning. As I look out my window at the blowing snow and listen to the reports of the freezing cold that is going to hit us soon, I must admit I am a tad bit jealous. I haven’t had a vacation in years and right now the winter blahs have set in.

I decided to daydream about where I would go if I could take off tomorrow. I definitely would not mind the spots such as Hawaii or a spa somewhere in the desert where laziness and pampering are top priority. However, I decided to do a little more dreaming.

I think my first choice would be a Disney park. I have always loved Disneyland in California. What better choice to make me smile and give me relaxation. Universal Studios comes a close second.

Then I decided to look into some more unusual destinations. So I typed “weird vacations” into Google and found a Web site that caught my eye and gave me ideas for some journeys that I thought would be fun.

I would love to visit San Jose (it is warm there) and visit the Winchester Mystery House. It is a 160-room mansion that kept carpenters busy around the clock for 38 years to stave off spirits. It has many functionless features such as windows buried in floorboards, staircases that lead nowhere and doors that open to blank walls. I love it. Museums kind of bore me, but this house would tweak my interest as I like the unusual in a house. I probably would want to build one like it using my imagination.

Another unique vacation I found was a freighter cruise. I decided I might want to pass on this. I don’t think I am a freighter kind of girl; however, if you are interested, I did find out that you can cruise on a freighter for as little as $75 a day. These ships go where cruise ships don’t, and you can stay on the cruise for up to 120 days and deliver goods all over the world. I doubt whether they offer massage and salon services on these cruises.

I decided to pass on the Volga River cruise, too. If you take the Volga River cruise in Russia, you will ride on mail boats that traverse the length of the Volga River. According to the guide, you will become like family with the locals who use the boats for transportation. It is supposed to be a beautiful cruise past villages and the boatmen regal you with local history. Since I don’t speak Russian and since the explanation of the journey included these words, “You will be amazed as the landscape changes from the icebound northern climes to the Crimean warmth.” I definitely will pass on this. The “icebound” is what really scared me away. I have had enough of icebound.

Then I came upon the llama trekking adventure vacation. The Deli Llama Wilderness Adventures is in the state of Washington. The llamas take you up into the high country of the North Cascades National Park. They had me there until I saw the words “high country.” I am the person who closes my eyes and hides in the backseat if we are on steep mountain roads. I am afraid of heights.

After investigating unique vacations, I decided maybe it would be better to investigate unique bed and breakfasts instead. So I was back on Google dreaming of an interesting bed and breakfast. The first place that interested me was Kokopelli’s Cave Bed & Breakfast in Farmington, N.M. A cave bed and breakfast was really intriguing. The description said that you really had to want to come there because getting there was not particularly easy. The cave is 70 feet below the surface and the entrance is located on a cliff face. (Remember, I am scared of heights.) You also must sign a waiver against accidents and be in shape as you must walk down a sloping path with intermittent steps and a ladder. I wondered since it is a cave if a greeting party of bats is part of the vacation package.

Then I found the Out N About Tree House Resort in Cave Junction, Ore. Watching the video of the resort reminded me of Swiss Family Robinson. I loved Swiss Family Robinson, and I always wanted a tree house when I was a kid. So if I were going to go on an unusual vacation, I would pick the Out N About Resort to spend a few days. I think I would risk my fear of heights for this resort. One of their tree houses is even called Swiss Family Robinson. What a perfect place for a family vacation in the trees, walking on a rope bridge, eating bananas.

Now it is time to return from my imaginary tour of the Winchester House, by way of the freighter cruise and the Volga River cruise with my brief stopover at Kopelli’s Cave Bed & Breakfast. I feel sad leaving the llamas behind in the North Cascades and I will miss trading my tree house for a conventional home, but it was nice to get away from the snow and cold for a little while.

I wonder where my dreams will take me during the next snowstorm. Perhaps I will visit the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, learn to build my own canoe and canoe down the river into the wilderness to find my next daydreaming adventure.
