Continuous snowfall makes for hazardous driving conditions

The Minnesota Department of Transportation advises no unnecessary travel in southeastern Minnesota due to snow and ice compacted roads and reduced visibility.

No closures of interstate highways or other roads are anticipated at this time; however, motorists may encounter brief lane closures where crashes occur. Driving conditions are currently difficult to hazardous across southeastern Minnesota.

MnDOT reminds motorists to follow safe winter driving practices. Motorists should:

Drive slowly on bridges, overpasses and tunnels.

Use a safe speed for winter driving conditions, regardless of the posted speed limit.

Not apply brakes on ice, which may easily cause a vehicle to skid.

Do not use cruise control.

Keep a safe stopping distance from the vehicle in front of you.

Not use a cell phone while driving and remember that texting is prohibited while driving in Minnesota.

Keep both hands on the steering wheel, your eyes on the road and your attention on your driving.
