Great defense and great execution has been a staple for the Glenville-Emmons boys’ basketball recently as it has won eight of its last nine and it proved so once again Friday against Houston in Glenville.

While the offense was sloppy, the defense again came up big again for Glenville-Emmons (14-6, 9-5 SEC) as the Wolverines defeated the Hurricanes 43-30.

Glenville-Emmons’ defense held Houston (9-13, 7-8 SEC) scoreless for 11 minutes, 10 seconds in the first half and forced the Hurricanes to turn the ball over 16 times. The Wolverines limited Houston to 27 percent from the field and 14 percent from the 3-point line.

“It was a great defensive game,” said Glenville-Emmons head coach Dan Frederickson. “We’ve had two really good back-to-back defensive games.”

The offense wasn’t nearly as good for either team as both shot less than 40 percent, but the Wolverines found other ways to score.

Glenville-Emmons shot 38 percent from the field and missed easy opportunities close to the basket to expand its lead, but took advantage at the free throw line.

“Offensively I felt like we could’ve taken control of the game a little bit more,” Fredrickson said. “We had a tough time getting into our offense — they kind of sped up us at times. We kinda played to the level of our opponent tonight.”

With the offense sputtering Glenville-Emmons used its opportunities at the free throw line to take an advantage.

The Wolverines got to the free throw line 18 times and converted 10 times. The Hurricanes only got to the line four times total and made two attempts.

Peter Hansen and Tyler Woodside led Glenville-Emmons with 10 points each.

Glenville-Emmons has three games remaining before heading into the section playoffs. The Wolverines will be back in action on Monday against Cannon Valley Lutheran.
