Two Lake Mills/Northwood-Kensett wrestlers advanced from the sectional round to districts Saturday.

Royce Byrnes, ranked 10th at 152 pounds and sixth-ranked Jake Brekken at 285 pounds moved on after wrestling in what head coach Alex Brandenburg said many considered one of the toughest sectionals in the state.

“All in all, our kids wrestled great today,” Brandenburg said. “It was nice to get a couple kids through considering our sectional last year was not as tough, and we had no kids get through. I am really happy about our season, we steadily improved the whole year and probably would have won 21 duals if some wouldn’t have been cancelled.”

The LMNK team finished with a 17-7 dual record.

Brekken (32-4) defeated Charles City’s Mark Tiedemann 5-1 and Byrnes fell 6-3 to Clear Lake’s Jordan Dahl in the championship round.

Other placewinners included Ben Irons, who finished third at 171 pounds. Junior Gallardo at 130, Calvin Beal at 140 and Isaac Buffington at 145 all placed fourth.

Clear Lake finished first with 213.5 points and Osage placed second with 191. LMNK finished sixth with 115 points.

Districts begin Saturday in Lake Mills.
