Four third-period goals by Rochester Mayo led to a 7-5 victory and the Albert Lea boys’ hockey team’s second consecutive loss Tuesday at City Arena.

Justin McLauglin scored his second goal of the game at 8:02 of the third period to lift the Spartans past the suddenly reeling Tigers.

Albert Lea has now lost two consecutive games after winning four consecutive games and seven of its past eight prior to the start of the week. The Tigers lost 6-2 to Mankato West Monday and gave up another seven goals to Mayo despite leading 5-3 heading into the third period.

“Well it’s frustrating,” said Albert Lea head coach Roy Nystrom. “Certainly, the last two nights we’ve given up six goals — that hurts.”

In a sloppy game the teams totaled 18 penalties and both gave up shorthanded goals. Mayo scored three times on the power play and the Tigers twice.

Albert Lea’s Eric Carlson scored three times and finished with four points while Austin Larson and Levi Hacker added the other goals.

The Tigers went up 5-3 after a second period where they scored three goals on nine shots, but in the third period the Spartans made the most with the fewest opportunities.

Albert Lea outshot Mayo 19-13 in the third period, but the Spartans scored four times. McLaughlin led the rally with a goal at 2:44.

Jacob Sikkema and James Powers added goals as Mayo stunned the Tigers.

Mayo, which lost 11 consecutive games at one point, suddenly finds itself winners in four of its past six.
