ST. PAUL(AP) — Minnesota lawmakers say they have bipartisan support for moving this year’s primary election to Aug. 10 instead of Sept. 14.

The change is intended to bring the state in compliance with a federal law that required more time between the primary and general election. The ultimate goal is to give military and overseas voters enough time to get their absentee ballots in.

Sen. Terri Bonoff and Rep. Steve Simon say their bill will move quickly through the legislative process. They appeared at a Capitol news conference on Friday with Republican Sen. Chris Gerlach, one of the bill’s co-sponsors.

The bill is due for its first Senate committee vote on Friday and gets its first House committee hearing on Tuesday.
