A spokesman says Gov. Tim Pawlenty is open to a slightly bigger construction projects bill as the dance of negotiations with lawmakers picks up.

Democrats who run the Legislature have passed bills that would borrow at least $1 billion to pay for public works projects like college buildings and infrastructure.

That compares to the Republican governor’s proposal for $685 million worth of projects backed by state bonds.

Pawlenty spokesman Brian McClung says the governor would consider a $725 million package, with his approval depending on the mix of projects.

Pawlenty met privately Wednesday with Democratic Sen. Keith Langseth and Rep. Alice Hausman, the Democratic sponsors of the Senate and House bills. Hausman says he told them their proposals were too big.
