Snowmobiler dies from injuries sustained in crash

The 32-year-old Austin man who sustained severe injuries on Sunday when his snowmobile went into a drainage ditch near Manchester passed away Monday morning, Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig confirmed.

The man, Cory Joe Allhiser, was treated at Albert Lea Medical Center and was later transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He died just after 11 a.m. Monday, Harig said.

According to Sheriff’s Office reports, authorities received a call of the crash at about 6:20 p.m. Sunday.

The people reporting the accident were not familiar with Freeborn County and could not describe their location. Albert Lea police dispatch, working with the enhanced 911 system, were able to locate the caller’s latitude and longitude coordinates and alerted responding emergency services.

Manchester First Responders, Albert Lea Medical Center Ambulance and Freeborn County Sheriff’s deputies responded.

The report added that three snowmobilers were traveling together eastbound on the county’s trail system in Section 14 of Manchester Township. They became separated from one sled, turned around, and backtracked to find the missing snowmobile and driver in the drainage ditch.
