We didn’t know Schmeltz had so many thumbs

UP – To The Big Freeze.
It was a success. If you judge success by the smiles on children’s faces, then our first Big Freeze was a success. Just watching more than 50 people jump into ice cold water was hilarious. Watching the faces on all of the little kids as people jumped into the water was priceless. Thanks also goes out to all the emergency personnel from the police, fire and ambulance services for providing a safe venture to all who jumped into the water.
DOWN – To security guards standing around while this girl gets kicked and punched.
In a Seattle bus tunnel, three security guards looked on as one teenage girl clobbers another. They stood right next to the two girls who were fighting and kicking on the ground.
The victim also had asked Seattle police officers on a foot patrol for help several times in the hour prior to the attack.
The attack was caught on video and aired on a Seattle TV station before now being available on many Internet sites. You might have seen it.
The security guards claimed company policy was only to observe and report, but sometimes, you have be the adult and do what’s right, not just what’s policy.
On the bright side, at least now those policies are getting a serious review.
UP – To The Albert Lea Tribune staff.
In the coming weeks you will see a wonderful Progress 2010 edition (Sunday, Feb. 28) along with our spring issue of Southern Minnesota magazine. Our incredible staff has been working on these two big projects along with our daily newspaper, 24/7 Web site, daily e-mail updates and frequent Text Alerts information for you, our customers, to make your life easier and informed. I want to thank this talented bunch as they make coming to work fun and easy!
UP – To Albert Lea girls’ hockey seniors Maddi Passingham and Lauren Klick.
This thumbs up is for making hockey so exciting the last several years! Thanks for the memories.
To the Albert Lea Tigers girls’ basketball team.
It was fun watching you beat Owatonna in a great game Monday night. Abbey Arends, Morgan Stadheim, Alyssa Sager, Skyler Anderson, Taylor Friehl, Mikaela Pierson and Sarah Wenum and the rest of the hustling girls’ team played a fantastic defensive game in knocking off a very good Owatonna squad. To hit the boards like they did was quite impressive. And then to follow that up with another big win Tuesday night over Rochester John Marshall, in which Abbey Arrends scores her 1,000th career point, you have a team on a roll! Great job! Congrats, Abbey.
UP – To the Minnesota Twins!
I can’t wait to see this team play this year. Outdoor stadium in July, a beer, a bratwurst and Mauer and the boys bashin’ the ball!
UP – To all winter sports athletes.
This is for pouring heart and soul into not only their sports but the balancing act of school, grades and practice. Kudos to you all!
To everyone who has sent money, prayers, and provisions to Haiti.
We need to not forget about this country’s devastation as even after a month. It is dealing with so many obstacles to standing upright again. Please, let’s be that helping hand that helps them stand up and be counted.
DOWN – To anyone who is benefiting on the Haitians suffering through stealing, false representation of adoptions and corrupt actions.
Shame on you.
UP – To the wrestling program.
One hundred ten junior wrestlers in the Albert Lea area wrestling program came out last week during the match between Austin and Albert Lea. Albert Lea won, of course.
It is pretty impressive to have so many youngsters wrestling and coming up through the ranks here in Albert Lea. Good job to all involved.
Tribune Publisher Scott Schmeltzer’s column appears every Thursday.
