1 dead, 3 hurt on I-35

One person died and three were injured Monday morning after a van and a semi collided on Interstate 35 north of Exit 11.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a green Chrysler minivan and a white 2007 Freightliner semi were both northbound on I-35 when, from the right lane, the driver of the minivan attempted to make a U-turn at a crossover. It was then that the minivan was struck by the Freightliner.
According to the State Patrol, the roadway was dry at the time of the crash. The interstate highway was covered with dense fog Monday.
The semi went into the median after it apparently struck the van on the driver’s side.
One of the passengers in the van, Edward Swope, 68, of Boone, Iowa, was killed.
The driver of the van, Howard Williams, 72, received non-life-threatening injuries, along with passengers Gordon Peterson, 71, Keith Williams, 62, all of Boone, Iowa. Passenger Raymond Moorman, 74, received no apparent injury, according to the State Patrol.
The trucker, Lloyd Bakke, 56, of Alma, Wis., also received no apparent injury. The name on the semi was California Overland Ltd. of Theilman, Minn.
Responding to the crash were Albert Lea Medical Center, Albert Lea Fire Department, Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Albert Lea Police Department and the Minnesota State Patrol.
One of the northbound lanes was closed following the collision.
