Ben Berhow, the former Albert Lea wrestling standout and state champion, fell short of becoming an All-American at the NCAA wrestling championships Friday in Omaha, Neb. after another day of overtime matches.
Berhow, who entered the tournament unranked, met third-seeded Zachery Rey of Lehigh with a chance to reach the semifinals on the line, but Rey won 2-1 on a tiebreaker.
In the consolation round Berhow wrestled seventh-seeded Jarod Trice from Central Michigan and once again needed overtime to determine the outcome.
Trice earned an escape in overtime and Berhow couldn’t come up with one of his own in a 6-5 loss.
Berhow trailed 3-1 heading into the third period but tied it when Trice was called for a clasp and an escape. Berhow got his first takedown of the match with seconds left in the period, but Trice escaped and was awarded a point for riding time to force overtime.
All four of Berhow’s matches went to overtime at the NCAA wrestling championships and he finished with a 2-2 record in his third trip to the championships.
