As of this morning, the contract for the new Albert Lea city manager had not yet been accepted.

The Albert Lea City Council on Saturday selected Alan Lanning, the city manager of Pines North, Colo., as the city’s new city manager, then offered him the position.

The selection came after three panels interviewed five finalists from around the country for the position.

Other finalists were Jim Norman, interim city manager of Afton; Dean Torreson, city manager of Macomb, Ill.; David Torgler, former city administrator of Leavenworth, Wash.; and Greg Sund, former city administrator of Spearfish, S.D.

Panels that interviewed the candidates were made up of the City Council, city staff and citizens.

Norman was selected as the backup candidate if Lanning does not take the job.

Mayor Mike Murtaugh said Saturday Lanning had an edge over the other candidates in his budgeting and infrastructure skills.

He was either the top or second choice of all the councilors.
