Getting to the Mayo Civic Center provided a thrill for the fifth-seeded Glenville-Emmons girls’ basketball team, but once the Wolverines got there the thrill was gone as No. 1 seed Goodhue rolled to a 61-33 victory in the semifinals of the 1A west subsection playoffs in Rochester.

Glenville-Emmons (13-13) got by rival Alden-Conger 40-38 in the first round Friday, but was outmatched against the Wildcats (21-7), who advanced to the subsection final and play Bethlehem Academy Friday in Rochester.

Goodhue, the defending section champion, pressured the Wolverines with its high zone and forced 20 turnovers.

The Wildcats also held Glenville-Emmons to 12 points in the first half to build a 27-point lead at the break.

Glenville-Emmons junior Kalli VanRyswyk led the Wolverines with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but the shots were hard to come by for Glenville-Emmons. The Wolverines made just nine of 54 attempts from the field.

Glenville-Emmons head coach Lisa Ziebell said she was pleased with how the season went, considering the team beat conference opponents it hadn’t for many years and advanced past the play-in game and first round for the first time in several years.

“After the game I said was proud, but I said, ‘You guys could be like this team we played,’” Ziebell said.

With all but two players returning next season Ziebell and the Wolverines appear on the right track.
