Lake Mills senior Chris Throne was recently named to the Iowa Newspaper Association first-team all-state team and to the Des Moines Register’s all-state second team.

Throne, a versatile 6-3 player, averaged 21.8 points this season for the Bulldogs and became just the second Lake Mills player under head coach Kyle Menke to be named to the all-state team.

Throne ranked 20th in the state of Iowa in scoring and helped the Bulldogs to a 16-5 season.

“He could score at the high school level in about every way possible,” Menke said.

Throne is mostly known for his 3-point shooting. He made 74, which ranked fourth in the entire state, but he worked to add other ways of scoring into his game.

Throne still hit 3s in bunches. He set a school record with 10 3-pointers against West Fork, en route to scoring 37 points. Throne twice scored 37 points and hit eight 3-points and six in other games.

Throne seemingly hit from anywhere behind the 3-point arc, even with defenders in his face.

Against Estherville-Lincoln-Central with the Bulldogs trailing, Throne twice hit 3s in a crowded area well beyond the 3-point line. It’s his quick release that allows him to get off contested shots and make those shots, Menke said, which is something coaches at the next level tend to notice.

In his senior season Throne improved on the areas he needed, especially his defense, Menke said.

Throne, who wants to play at the next level, turned in an even better season than his junior year where he emerged as the top threat for the Bulldogs.

With teams paying even more attention to him he increased his scoring average by five points per game, shot a higher percentage from the floor and the free throw line.
