Scouting for Food is March 27

Published 9:10 am Saturday, March 20, 2010

Area Scouts will be collecting food on Saturday, March 27, as part of their annual Scouting for Food project. This year’s goal is 5,000 pounds of food.

The Scouts begin collecting food at 10 a.m. that day. They will be visiting neighborhoods in Albert Lea and a few surrounding communities, picking up bags of food that are left outside with the identifying flyer attached. The flyer will be distributed in the Freeborn County Shopper with information regarding Scouting for Food. Scouts will also be working with area businesses, collecting food from employees and the public. These businesses are: Albert Lea Medical Center, Albert Lea Select Foods, Mrs. Gerry’s, Cargill, ABG, Hy-Vee and Nelson’s Market Place.

People can also drop off food donations at the Freeborn County Fairgrounds between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. March 27.

The food collected benefits local food shelves in the area. The amount of food will be weighed and totaled throughout the day. Monetary donations are accepted payable to the Salvation Army Food Shelf or Ecumenical Food Pantry at First Presbyterian Church.

Started in 1988, when Scouts collected an estimated 65 million cans of nonperishable food nationwide, Scouting for Food has grown into a annual event.
