Years after the death of Cargill heir Margaret Cargill, a charitable foundation she started with a $2.1 billion gift is getting up and running.

The Margaret A. Cargill Foundation is hiring up to 75 staff members and plans to open headquarters in Eden Prairie this year.

The organization will instantly become the largest charitable foundation in Minnesota.

The foundation will not accept unsolicited requests for grants. Rather, it will invite groups to apply for funding. Still, it’s creating a buzz in the nonprofit communities.

Kate Barr, executive director of Nonprofit Assistance Fund, says everyone wants to know what the foundation will focus on and when it will start making grants.

Margaret Cargill died in 2006 at age 85. She was the granddaughter of William W. Cargill, founder of the Cargill Co. and former Albert Lea resident.
