The funeral service for Roger D. Olson of Albert Lea will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The Rev. John Holt will officiate. Interment will be in Hillcrest Cemetery. Military honors Will be accorded by Albert Lea veterans organizations. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Bonnerup Funeral Service, Albert Lea, and one hour before the service at the church.
Roger passed away with his family at his side at the Albert Lea Medical Center on Friday, April 16, 2010. He was 78.
He was born on July 14, 1931, in Albert Lea, the son of Russell and Nina (Nelson) Olson. He graduated from Ellendale High School in 1949 and was in the U. S. Army, serving in Trieste. Roger was united in marriage to Carol Troe on Sept. 25, 1955, at First Lutheran Church, Albert Lea.
As a young man he had worked at Olson Implement in Ellendale, then at Rilco/Weyerhauser later becoming a partner at Alamco Wood Products. He was a member of First Lutheran Church. His “Chevy” (birthday gift from son Greg and family) was the joy of his life. He enjoyed car shows and coin collecting. Roger, was so proud of his grandchildren and loved watching them in their sports activities when he could. He was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins, the Vikings and the Timberwolves.
Roger will be missed by his family, wife Carol; son, Gregory and his wife Kim of Owatonna; grandchildren: Matthew (Calli) Olson, Cassy Olson, Ashley Olson, Zachary Olson and Derek Olson; brother, James (Marci) Olson; brother-in-law, Ed (Lorraine) Troe; special cousin, Joan (Erv) Frietag; nephews and nieces: Andrew Olson, Erika Olson, Jay Troe, Jon (Denise) Troe and Chad (Penny) Troe; and other family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Nina Olson; daughter, Kimberly (Olson) Goddard, father-in-law and mother-in-law: Ole and Carolyn Troe; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Mel and Judy Troe; niece, Maryann Bridgewater; and nephew, Jeff Troe.
