Filing for various elected positions in Freeborn County and the state begins Tuesday and goes through June 1.

In Albert Lea, seats up for election include that of mayor and of Albert Lea City Council members in wards 2, 4 and 6.

Current Mayor Mike Murtaugh, 2nd Ward Councilor Larry Baker, 4th Ward Councilor Reid Olson and 6th Ward Councilor Al “Minnow” Brooks have not yet announced their intentions for the election.

People wishing to file for a city race can do so with City Clerk Shirley Slater-Schulte at City Hall.

In Freeborn County, there are numerous positions to be voted on by citizens this fall.

Positions up for election include the following:

attorney

sheriff

auditor-treasurer

 recorder

2nd and 4th District commissioners

 3rd and 4th District Soil and Water District positions

Thus far, Freeborn County Attorney Craig Nelson and Freeborn County Sheriff Mark Harig have announced their intention to seek re-election.

Nelson has served as county attorney for the past 19 years and as a lawyer for 34 years.

“I know that there is no other job which satisfies my interest in providing a variety of legal services, and which allows me to meet and work with a wide cross-section of the citizens of this county,” Nelson said in his announcement to seek re-election on the Freeborn County website.

In announcing his intent for re-election, Harig pointed out his highlights as sheriff thus far, including the opening of a new jail, garnering a federal contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and the implementation of the Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response, also known as ARMER.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Freeborn County Commissioners and for the citizens of Freeborn County,” Harig said. “I look forward to continuing as your Sheriff to upgrade emergency management planning and training within the Sheriff’s Office to keep Freeborn County safe.”

People wishing to file for a county race can do so at the Freeborn County Auditor-Treasurer’s Office in the Freeborn County Government Center. The cost is $20 for the Soil and Water Conservation District seats and $50 for the other races, said Auditor-Treasurer Dennis Distad.

On the state and national level, seats up for election include that of state senate District 27, currently held by state Sen. Dan Sparks; District 27A representative, currently held by Rep. Robin Brown; and 1st District U.S. House of Representatives, currently held by Rep. Tim Walz.

Also up for election are Freeborn County District Court Judges John A. Chesterman and Steve Schwab.

People wishing to file for these races can do so with the Minnesota Secretary of State’s Office.

The filing cost is $100 for a representative or senator, $300 for a district court judge, and $300 for U.S. representative, Distad said.

This is the first year filing will begin in May as a result of the statewide primary elections being moved to the second Tuesday in August.
