Fred Silbaugh

Funeral services for Fred Laverne Silbaugh, 89, of Albert Lea will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Bayview/Freeborn Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Richard Spande will officiate. Interment will be at the Hillcrest Cemetery with military honors accorded by area veterans organizations. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Fred died Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at his home.
Fred Laverne Silbaugh was born on Jan. 31, 1921, to Beauford and Rosella (Olsen) Silbaugh in Agar, S.D. When he was 15 he moved with his family to Minnesota. After his junior year in high school, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. On returning he went back to school and graduated from Pine River High School. Fred then enlisted in the United States Army and served his country in World War II, helping build the ALCAN Highway and serving in the South Pacific. After the service he attended the University of Minnesota.
On July 16, 1948 he was united in marriage to June Erickson in Pine River. Fred graduated from the U of M in 1951 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. He worked within the Minnesota welfare system after graduating. The couple moved to Albert Lea where Fred was the welfare director for Freeborn County for 25 years. He was a devoted husband and father and treasured time spent with his family. Fred’s pastimes were watching the Twins and Vikings, gardening, fishing and doing puzzles of any kind. Fred deeply loved all members of his family and will be dearly missed. Blessed be his memory.
Survivors include his wife, June; children: Roxann (Tim) Satrang, Valerie (Mark) Swenson and Tim Silbaugh; grandchildren: Ty, Hilary and Jessie Satrang, Lee and Kelly Dickey, Kody Hansen, Ben Silbaugh, Brent (Serena) Swenson and Bart Swenson; great-grandchildren: Brandon, Kaitlyn, Olivia and Ava; sister, Vanita Reinbold; and many nieces and nephews.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Kenzie; brothers: Walter, John and Beauford Jr.; and sister, Pansy Swenson.
