Hermina Van Wilgen, 89, Hollandale

Funeral services for Hermina Van Wilgen, age 89, of Hollandale will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollandale Reformed Church. The Rev. Neal Ooms will officiate. Interment will be at Hollandale Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Hermina died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Friendship Manor Health Care Center in Shakopee.
Hermina Van Wilgen was born Dec. 23, 1920, in Appleton, Iowa, the daughter of John and Meinja (Weivrandts) Waalkens. Hermina moved with her family in 1925 to Hollandale. She attended Hollandale Central School through the eighth grade, then later in life attended Albert Lea High School and she graduated from Austin High School. Hermina had a love for history. On June 5, 1941, she was united in marriage to Tennis Van Wilgen in Hollandale. They spent many years together farming and she worked as a homemaker. In their early years Hermina and Tennis were very active in 4-H and teaching Sunday School and Bible study. In her later years she worked part time at Sears. Hermina was a member of Hollandale Reformed Church and had been very active in many circles. She enjoyed walking, biking, traveling, playing cards, especially Hand and Foot, knitting, crocheting and reading. During her stay at Bancroft Estates she obtained college credits.
Survivors include her daughter-in-law, Sharon Van Wilgen of Prior Lake; grandchildren, Kelly (Andy) Biros of Burnsville, and Kristina (Bryan) Hammitt of Bemidji; great-grandchildren, Dustin Biros, Leah Biros, Tate Hammitt, Tanner Hammitt and Trent Hammitt; brother, Henry (Eines) Waalkens of Albert Lea; and many nieces and nephews.
Hermina was preceded in death by her parents, John and Meinja Waalkens; husband, Tennis Van Wilgen; son, Kenneth Van Wilgen; sister, Alice Scheffer; brothers, John, Peter and Melvin Waalkens.
