WELLS — The No. 19-ranked United South Central baseball team has been trying to find its hitting for the past week and going against Fairmont’s Logan Peymann the Rebels didn’t find any answers.

Peymann threw a one-hitter and ninth-ranked Fairmont erupted for nine runs in the top of the sixth for a 10-0 victory over USC in Wells on Tuesday night.

Peymann went all seven innings, allowed one hit and struck out five.

“We just couldn’t get the bat in the ball,” said Rebels head coach Pat Frank. “It has nothing to do with the pitching or whatever. We need to muster up more than one hit.”

USC’s struggles seemed to find its way to the defense as well. The Rebels committed six errors in the field.

“That has been our downfall this year,” Frank said. “It seems to go in streaks. I like to think hitting is contagious, for us errors are contagious.”

Though the offense and defense struggled, the Rebels did get a nice outing on the mound from sophomore Jason Huper.

Huper allowed three hits and one unearned run in five innings of work in his first varsity start.

Huper left before the nine-run sixth inning.

The Rebels went through three pitchers after Huper left the game and the Cardinals racked up 10 of their 15 hits in that sixth inning.

“It’s just baseball,” Frank said. “Things go bad, then all of a sudden things start going for you. That’s the way we have been playing in the last week and a half to two weeks.”

The Rebels play Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Thursday in Wells.
