After getting a non-conference win against Northwood-Kensett on Tuesday, the Lake Mills baseball team looked to get a win in conference play against Belmond-Klemme on Wednesday in Belmond.
Junior Drey LyBarger threw seven strong innings and the Lake Mills offense scored four runs in the top of the seventh to defeat Belmond-Klemme 6-1.
“Even though it was a team that should have been easier to beat, it was a quality win.” Lake Mills baseball coach Jason Blaser said.
LyBarger entered the seventh inning with a no-hitter and shutout in hand until Belmond-Klemme broke both up in the bottom half of the inning.
LyBarger would get the win as he allowed one hit and struck out 12.
“Other than a couple a walks he did very well,” Blaser said. “I thought his control was a lot better.”
Although, the Bulldogs offense didn’t ignite until the seventh inning against Belmond’s Derek Kindwall.
Lake Mills had four of their six hits in the top half of the seventh inning and scored four runs off Kindwall to take a 6-1 lead.
Alex Grunhovd went 1-for-4 with two RBI for the Bulldogs, while Royce Byrnes went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Lake Mills now improves to 16-3 on the season and 6-2 in North Iowa Conference play.
The Bulldogs are back on the diamond on Thursday against Clear Lake in Lake Mills.
