Racers Continue Their Winning Ways At Chateau Raceway

After the devastating storms in the area on Thursday night, it turned out to be a beautiful evening for racing at Chateau Raceway on Friday. The Austin area was spared from the nasty weather this time. In fact the speedway only received three-quarters of an inch of rain.

Many people in the racing community suffered damage from the tornadoes and high winds that moved through the area. This was deja vu for area residents as this all happened one-year to the day of the tornado that hit the Austin area last summer.

Racing got off to a rough beginning when five of the first six heat races were unable to complete a lap before the caution flag would fly. The features started off well when the first four features required only two yellows and two races went caution-free.

Then during the French’s Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified feature, there was a vicious accident. Last week’s winner Jacob Dahle had rocketed off of row one and had a three-quarter of a straightway lead on the field.

Dahle was coming up fast on the slower moving car of Dave Moffitt on the front stretch. It appeared Moffitt was possibly going to exit the speedway as Dahle zoomed to the outside trying to make the pass. They touched and Dahle’s car went on a series of violent rollovers with the car ending up on the top of the speedway in turn one.

Rescue crews were on the scene and extricated the driver from the car. Dahle was transported by ambulance to Austin Medical Center for evaluation. Good news came Saturday morning as Dahle was released from the hospital with a concussion and some bumps and bruises.

After a lengthy delay, the racers decided that they would continue to race. Mike Sorensen led the rest of the way to win his third of the year at Chateau. USMTS series regular Chase Junghans finished second with Jason Cummins third. Josh Mattick had a good run in fourth, and Tommy Myer was fifth after going to the pits early in the race. In other racing action, it was Jesse Anderson who won his first Power 96/KQAQ 970AM IMCA Stock Car feature. Anderson led from the drop of the green and held off challenges from Chris Adams on laps eight and nine and again four laps later

The battle for second was pretty intense itself as Adams battled Larry Portis until lap eighteen. That is when Portis made the pass and finished there behind Anderson. Adams was third with Dan Mackenthun fourth and Matt Speckman in fifth.

The Misgen Auto Parts Pure Stock had all sorts of trouble getting their heat races completed, but come feature time only one caution slowed the race. Dylan Nelson took the lead from Jim Briggs on lap two, held off a challenge from Brandon Shaner and won his third feature of the season.

Shaner was able to get close to the leader about the halfway point, but Nelson held him off and pulled away for the win. Shaner was second with Jason Newkirk third, Stacy Krohnberg fourth and Dustin Sletten fifth.

Bryan Hernandez secured the lead early on in the Farm Boy BBQ Wissota Midwest Modified feature. Beau Lammers gave chase early on as last weeks winner Cody Gardner exited the speedway on the first lap. Brandon Davis got shuffled back a bit while Gardner left the track, but it would not slow him down for long.

As the top two pulled away, Davis was up to fifth and then stole fourth from Troy Dahle on lap seven. Mike Paulson was trying to get by Lammers for second and then Davis made it a three-way race on lap nine. Paulson stole second and Davis glided along to third on lap ten.

Hernandez was encountering lapped traffic when Davis drove to the inside of Paulson. The leaders were mixed in with the lapped cars and Davis took second on lap thirteen. Davis then slid to the inside of Hernandez and snagged the lead the very next lap.

From there it was all Davis as he cruised to his fourth win in the caution-free affair and a clean sweep also. Hernandez was second with Paulson third. Greg Pfeifer Jr. had his seventh top five finish in fourth with Lammers fifth.

Jesse Baer led the entire RS Auto Rebuilders Wissota Street Stock feature until the final lap. Baer was challenged the entire distance by Mike Blowers who maintained second and stayed close with the leader.

There were some excellent battles going on behind the lead duo. They were two and three wide at times as they cycled around the speedway during the 15-lap event. It all came down to the final lap as the leaders came up on some lapped traffic.

Baer slid just a little high in turn four and Blowers shot to the inside with the checkered flag in the air. Blowers edged out front and stole the win for his second triumph in a row in another caution-free feature. Baer was second with A.J Zvorak third. Dan Holland was fourth and Jason Barber rounded out the top five.
