Rain delays Lake Mills’ rout

Lake Mills poured on runs against Woden-Crystal Lake-Titonka in the opening two innings before lightning postponed the game in the bottom of the fourth.

The Bulldogs (3-1) opened the game aggressively, swinging at first pitches and taking advantage of WCT errors.

Royce Byrnes began a big first inning for Lake Mills by lacing a double down the right field line and taking third base on a throwing error. Drey LyBarger scored Byrnes on a groundout to second base and the Bulldogs continued taking bases as they were given to them.

After being hit by the first pitch, Taylor Throne took first base. He moved all the way to third, without hesitation, on a wild pitch thrown by Tigers pitcher Tommy Shutter and scored on Levi Dahle’s single to center.

Pinch-runner Jon Erickson kept the pressure the Tiger’s defense by dashing to second on one of his two stolen bases of the day, and Alex Grunhovd drove him home with a sharp single up the middle, right by a dodging Shutter.

The Bulldogs stayed aggressive as Bryan Hangesteg and Josh Zabel each singled and took second base on a steal and error, respectively.

Zabel’s RBI drove in the last of four first inning runs before Throne grounded out to end the frame.

Lake Mills came ready to play and head coach Jason Blaser was pleased with their assertion in the batter’s box and on the bases.

“I like that we’re not waiting for the perfect pitch,” Blaser said. “If there is a strike going across the plate we’re being very aggressive with it.”

That aggressiveness continued in the second where the Bulldogs scored four runs on three hits including a three-run homer by Chad Ullmann.

Lake Mills also reached first on two Tiger errors and scored their fourth run as Erickson moved from first to home without a Bulldog hit.

Starting pitcher Dahle paced the Bulldogs, giving up only one run on two hits in four innings. He worked out of a jam in the third inning with an opposing player on third and no outs by striking out three straight batters.

“Dahle did a nice job of establishing his fastball,” Blaser said. “He only threw two curveballs all game, other than that it has been all fastball and he did a good job.”

The Bulldogs added one run in the fourth as Hengesteg’s doubled to left field, scoring Erickson. Play was suspended with Zabel at the plate with one out.
