Rosella “Rose” Viola (Carstensen) Jacobson, 87, passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery prior to the service.
Rose was born Aug. 27, 1922, in rural St. James, the daughter of Thomas and Rosa (Rabe) Carstensen. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James. As a child she lived in Godahl, St. James and Madelia. Her schooling took place in St. James, through eleventh grade. She married Ernest Kato Jacobson on July 16, 1941, in Sioux Falls, S.D. They lived in various cities including St. James, Hill City, Grand Rapids and Albert Lea. Rose was a support for Ernie in the various businesses that he started and profited in, including restaurants, farming, Jacobson Paint and Decorating, and the founding of Jake’s Pizza, a pizza chain in Minnesota.
Rose was a homemaker extraordinaire. She kept her family well fed with her home baked breads, cookies, kringla and lefse. Her grandchildren looked forward to Grandma’s kringlas upon each visit! She also kept her children and grandchildren clothed in homemade pajamas and sweatsuits. Rose’s Christian faith was evident throughout her life. The grace of God carried her through many of life’s storms. She was very active in the First Lutheran Church of Grand Rapids and Zion Lutheran Church of Albert Lea.
Rose is survived by her six children: Ernie (Katrina) Jacobson of Grand Rapids, Larry (Connie) Jacobson of Bemidji, Mark (Sue) Jacobson of Bemidji, Paul (Sharon) of Bemidji, Nancy (Tim) Ramey of Grand Marais, Robert Jacobson of Wichita, Kan.; 16 grandchildren: John (Stephanie) Jacobson of Maple Grove, Scott (Linda) Jacobson of Annandale, Andrea (Rusty) Kuhl of Nebraska, Erika (John) Ahlbrecht of Bemidji, Karl (Erin) Jacobson of Bemidji, Nichole (Scott) Sinclair of Hastings, Sarah (Mike) McNamara of Hastings, Brian Jacobson of La Quinta, Calif., Peter (Melanie) Ramey of Columbia, Mo., Paul Ramey of Minneapolis, Jonathan Ramey of Grand Marais, Kristen Ramey of Grand Marais, Kara Ramey of Grand Marais, Abigail Jacobson of Wichita, Kan., Heather (Tom) Rudolph of Montecello, Ill., Arja (Brad) Reiger of San Diego, Calif.; and 27 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Violet (Carstensen) Anderson of Madelia and her brothers: Harold Carstensen of San Antonio, Texas, and Norman (Kathleen) Carstensen of Marshall.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest; three sisters: Helen, Irene and Norma; three brothers: Henry, “Butch” and Vernon (Sarge); three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
