With cleanup efforts nearly complete in Albert Lea, Wadena and other communities devastated by last week’s tornadoes, The Salvation Army is preparing to provide long-term recovery services to hundreds of affected households.

Statewide, 101 homes were destroyed, 152 suffered major damage and 224 received minor damage.

Salvation Army case managers will soon be available to provide financial assistance to qualifying households affected by the tornadoes. Starting today, individuals and families in Albert Lea and surrounding communities can call 507-373-8776 for more information. In Wadena and surrounding communities, the number to call is 218-639-1595.

In addition to financial assistance, The Salvation Army is providing critical incident stress management support to communities. Minnesota Department of Public Safety officials said there “is a huge concern with mental health issues for youth” in communities affected by the tornadoes. Trained Salvation Army counselors will be at the Cyber Café in Wadena, a popular youth venue, on June 29 at 6 p.m. to offer support.

The Salvation Army will continue to provide food, beverages and emotional care to northern and southern Minnesota communities as cleanup efforts wrap up this weekend. As of Friday, the Salvation Army had served in excess of 20,000 meals, 70,000 drinks and 35,000 snacks.
