Make-up races at Chateau made for an interesting Fri. night

Published 8:56 am Tuesday, July 6, 2010

This Friday the sun shined gloriously over the Chateau Raceway for once. The large crowd in attendance got a bang for their buck and then some this week. First off there were seven make-up features to be run that were rained out last Friday. Then 104-cars filled the pit area for this week’s action.

Along with that, stuntman Rocky Hardcore was on hand and performed his “Human Torch”, “Wall Of Steel” and “Flaming Death Drop” stunts during the show. The 29-race program concluded shortly after 12:30 a.m.

Eleven different winners highlighted the 14 feature races with Brandon Davis, Larry Portis and Jake Bigelow all sweeping their divisions action. Tonight’s card was sponsored by S&S Auto Salvage & Repair and I-35 Auto Recycling.

The program got under way taking care of the leftover business from last week with the make-up features running first. The Misgen Auto Parts Pure Stocks came out first and Matt Brooks led early on.

Jason Newkirk slid by for the lead on lap seven and Adam Godeke was now chasing him. They went door-to-door on laps 13 and 14. Godeke went to inside on lap 14 and challenged for the lead. The duo made contact and Godeke stole the lead.

Godeke went on for his second win with Newkirk a close second. Brooks finished third with Brandon Shaner in fourth. Wayne Bellrichard scored his first top five of the season in fifth.

The RS Auto Rebuilders Wissota Street Stocks were up next with Jason Barber along with Jesse Stahl in row one. Stahl snapped up the lead right away with Barber second and Matt Eustice a close third. A.J. Zvorak cracked the top five as Dan Holland moved by Eustice for third on lap two.

Zvorak slipped by Eustice for fourth on lap three and closed in on Holland and Barber. Meanwhile, Stahl cruised up front when Barber slipped up the track a bit. That allowed Holland and Zvorak to skate on past. Zvorak was now up to second as Mike Blowers moved into the top five.

Stahl felt some pressure from Zvorak, but held on the rest of the way for his first win of 2010. Holland was in third with Blowers and Barber rounding out the top five spots at the checkered.

Travis Wytaske and Jerry Young led the Farm Boy BBQ Wissota Midwest Modifieds to start their 20-lap make-up feature. Wytaske led early as Greg Pfeifer Jr. took second as Brandon Davis was already fifth on lap two.

Davis then went three wide with Adam Stowell and Jerry Young and got to third. Wytaske got a bit loose in turn two on lap five and that allowed Pfeifer, Davis and Young all to blast on by. Pfeifer Jr. now felt the persistent pressure from Davis and it was a great battle for the lead.

Davis continued to apply pressure trying the low groove and then the high groove on laps eleven through fourteen. Finally on lap 15, Davis made the pass in turn four and quickly pulled away.

The remaining laps belonged to Davis, winning his fifth feature of the season and sweeping the action also. Pfiefer Jr. got yet another top five in second, Young finished third with Wytaske and Stowell in the top five.

The Power 96/KQAQ970AM IMCA Stock Cars had six cars start their make-up feature. Even though there were only six, it was a great race. Jesse Anderson, Chris Adams and Larry Portis put on a whale of a show for the lead in the early stages.

They went door-to-door on several occasions and swapped some paint a few times also. They even went three wide for the lead on lap eight. Adams would drop out soon after with a flat tire. Portis would finally get out front on lap ten and pull away. It was Portis’ second win at Lansing this year.

Todd Scharkey dominated the French’s Repair and Fabrication USRA Modified make-up feature from the start. Scharkey started second, took the lead from Josh Mattick on lap one and set sail.

Scharkey led the entire way for his second win with Mattick second. Greg Jensen had a great run in third, as did Dustin Steinbrink who was fourth. Thirteen year-old Lucas Schott rounded out the top five.

Jake Bigelow won his first S&S Auto Salvage Junior Hornet feature in the make-up event. Terry Blowers scored his fourth feature win in the S&S Auto Salvage Hornets. After a stunt performed by Rocky Hardcore, heat races were staged at 9:40 p.m. and it was on for the full program yet to be run.

Fifteen heat races were clicked off in just a tick over an hour. After a pretty smooth ran program with minimum yellow flags to start the night, it quickly went out the window. The Pure Stocks had all sorts of difficulties in their 15-lap feature.

This race ended up being cut with six yellow flags being displayed. When the race ended it was Dylan Nelson who won his second feature of the season. Dustin Sletten was second with Brady Krohnberg, James Connors and Randy Rauen rounding out the top five.

The Wissota Street Stocks had Jason Barber and Jesse Baer in row one. Matt Eustice took over until lap four when he slid high and then spun. That collected Dan Holland and Mike Blowers. Holland was done for the night as Eustice went to the work area.

That left A.J. Zvorak up front with Tony Shaner and Jesse Baer behind him. Blowers snuck past Baer for third on lap five, but then spun and out came the caution flag. On the restart, Zvorak led, but Baer challenged Shaner for second. Baer bounced off the wall and Ryan Goergen snagged third.

Then the left front tire exited Baer’s car and he slid to the infield as the caution was out again. When the green came back out, Goergen came alive and zoomed past Zvorak for the lead with Shaner now second. Zvorak gathered himself back up and took bac ksecond on lap seven.

Zvorak would close in on Goergen and create some pressure for the leader. Goergen held his line and led the remainder of the race for his second win. Zvorak was a close second with Shaner third. Blowers rallied to finish fourth and Tyler Peterson was fifth.
