Man dies in ATV crash, boy hurt

An 18-year-old man died and a 5-year-old was injured Sunday after an ATV crash just northeast of Albert Lea.

According to a Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office news release, Dennis McDermott, of Austin, died at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester from injuries he sustained in the crash.

The 5-year-old, whose name has not been released, was treated and released from Albert Lea Medical Center for cuts and scratches.

Dispatchers received a call of the crash at about 6 p.m. at 76032 245th St. The location is on a gravel road about two miles northwest of the Interstate 90/Interstate 35 cloverleaf interchange.

When deputies arrived, they found McDermott was in critical condition lying beside the ATV, according to the release. The 5-year-old was conscious and communicating. He had injuries that reportedly were not life-threatening.

Two ALMC ambulances responded, and McDermott was airlifted to St. Marys Hospital. He died later that night.

The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office, Clarks Grove First Responders, Albert Lea Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Albert Lea Medical Center and Mayo 3 responded to the call.

Stabbing reported in Albert Lea

A man was reportedly stabbed after an altercation at 1201 St. John Ave. in Albert Lea this morning.

According to police, the incident took place at about 4 a.m. today between two men who reportedly knew each other. Police stated they are still investigating the case. No one has yet been arrested.

The stab wounds were reportedly not life-threatening.
