The third annual “Get Your Pink On” Golf for the Cure was held on Saturday July 24, 2010, at Oak View Golf Course in Freeborn.

This was a nine-hole, two gal scramble with fun games and surprises on every hole.

This wonderful event is organized by seven committee members: Wendy Anderson, Kelly Goskeson, Robin Hoefs, Wende Taylor, Jenni Hanna, Nicole Brown and Brenda Madson.

Once again there were strawberries and champagne served at Hole 2, our volunteers assigned to this hole brought in the strawberries along with bubbles.

The “Man Drive” was on number five where you could donate to the cause and have the guys tee off for your team.

There were also several holes with other events such as a hoola hoop contest, limbo contest, toilet seat drive and the more traditional longest/shortest drive, closest to the pin and two holes with “Hole In One” opportunities.

Prizes were also given for going into the sand and water.

The committee was surprised by some of the volunteers who added a tiki bar, along with prizes, Hawaiian leis and hibiscus hair barrettes. The volunteers have just as much fun as the golfers at this event and (they are already talking about what they will all be adding to their holes next year.)

These hole games and extra activities would not be possible without the help of our men volunteers.

The silent auction was once again a huge success and possbile because of the generosity given to us by the various community businesses who donate to the cause.

Hot dogs and chips were served for lunch at the cost of a free will donation. There was also a potato bar supper included in with each paid registration.

The goals for this event were to raise awareness through education, to raise important funds that are used to distribute educational materials, provide diagnostic and screening procedures as well as innovative breast cancer research.

Remember, early detection saves lives.

The hosts of the event were proud to once again partner with Susan G. Komen for the Cure Minnesota in their crusade to fight this terrible disease. This organization was founded more than 25 years ago by Susan’s sister, Nancy Brinker, and has evolved into one of the world’s largest networks for breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives.

This year the event had 80 registered golfers along with 29 volunteers who all enjoyed the fun filled day.

Three registered golfers who participated in this year’s event are breast cancer survivors, whom we honor for their strength and courage.

This year the approximate total money raised is an impressive $8,500, compared to last year’s $7,500 and $3,500 in the first year.

The committee for “Get Your Pink On” Golf for the Cure would like to extend a thank you to all who helped make this year’s event a success. Our 2011 date has been set for July 23. Again thank you for your support.
