Albert Lea Abstract has unclaimed abstracts

After being open for three days to distribute abstracts to clients, Albert Lea Abstract Co. still has abstracts that have not been claimed, the company’s lawyer, Kenneth White of Mankato, said Wednesday.
The business was open a series of hours Sept. 14, 16 and 21 for the first time since June 22, when police executed a search warrant at the company, 205 S. Washington Ave., and seized scores of documents involved with pending files.
The company’s owner, Linda Tuttle, a former Freeborn County commissioner, has since been accused of using her company to divert money into her own accounts for personal use. According to the investigation, more than $1 million in missing funds has been reported.
“We’re going to work on coming up with some kind of alternative plan to try and figure out a way to get the balance of these back to people,” White said of the remaining abstracts.
He noted he is not sure what that process is going to be, but it may involve an effort to simply mail the abstracts to the street addresses listed on the documents. He did not know the exact number of abstracts still in the hands of the company.
White noted from what he’s aware of, the process of returning the abstracts to clients went well during the three days the business was open, though he said there were some abstracts that people came in looking for that were not able to be found. He was not sure whether those somehow got misfiled or whether Albert Lea Abstract never even had them.
If people have questions about locating their abstract, they can contact White of the Law Office of Kenneth R. White in Mankato at 507-345-8811.
Tuttle is next scheduled to appear in Freeborn County District Court Nov. 12.
She faces 12 counts of felony theft by swindle, along with one count of racketeering in the case.
