Lake Mills trailed in 1st set, wins 3-0
NORTHWOOD, Iowa — Everytime the Osage Green Devils went on a run, Josie Brackey was there to stop it.
Brackey led the No.12 Bulldogs (16-0) with 11 kills and eight digs Tuesday, as the Lake Mills volleyball team beat Osage 3-0 to remain undefeated on the season.
“We didn’t play exceptional tonight,” Lake Mills head coach Jim Boehmer said. “Actually, we were poor and that hurt our ability to run offense.”
The Bulldogs won the match 25-20, 25-16 and 25-12, but were tested in the first set.
The the opening set, Lake Mills fell behind 2-3 early before going on a 12-3 run, making the score 14-5.
The Green Devils responded with a 8-1 run of their own on the serves of Osage’s Jessica Rogers, but a Brackey spike ended the streak and put the Bulldogs up 16-13.
Osage then won four of five points, and took a 20-19 lead when a Brackey spike went into the net.
Down one point with the momentum shifting towards Osage, the Bulldogs were out of timeouts but in a position they’ve worked on in practice.
“We took timeouts early to try to keep the lead,” Boehmer said. “When we were down and had used both our timeouts I thought we were in trouble, but we went on a nice little run.”
The Bulldogs tied the set at 20 and Brackey rattled off five straight service points to lead the Lake Mills to a 25-20 win.
The second set was back-and-forth, with the Bulldogs opening up a 4-0 lead and eventually extending it to 10-3.
After a timeout, the Green Devils went on a 5-0 run of their own until another Brackey kill put the Bulldogs up 11-8, and an 11-4 run to end the set pushed Lake Mills to a 25-16 win.
Osage was competitive with Lake Mills during the middle of the third set, but an 8-1 run to start the set put the Green Devils in too big a hole.
The team’s each exchanged seven points to put the score at 17-11 late in the final set, but an 8-1 run and three strong serves by Amanda Lampman to end the set downed Osage 25-12.
The Bulldogs served 96 percent as a team with three aces from Brackey.
Shelby Kuper and Lampman had nine and seven kills, respectively, Morgan Fjelstad had 28 set assists and Lindy Pins chipped in seven digs.
The Bulldogs play again 7:30 p.m. Thursday at North Iowa.
