You Can Help

The following are some of the volunteer opportunities currently open in Freeborn County. If you can help with any of them or would like to volunteer for others, call Pat Stumme, retired and Senior Volunteer Program Director, at Senior Resources, 377-7433.
Albert Lea Area Schools: Many children need adult help to improve their reading or do other homework. Plan now to mentor a child through the AmeriCorps program and Reading Partners in the elementary schools to help a child prepare to succeed in school. You will volunteer 30 minutes one or two times per week. Call Stumme at 377-7433 for more details.
Big Island Rendezvous: What better way to celebrate Minnesota history than to tour with elementary students through the Big Island Rendezvous? Tour guides are needed to ensure that the classes get to their appointed area on schedule. Orientation is at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Bancroft Bay. You are needed on Sept. 30 or Oct. 1 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Help one day or two and get free admission to the weekend event. Call 477-7433 and ask for Stumme to register.
Feeding America One Child at a Time: Volunteers are needed at the Salvation Army to help fill child-size backpacks, deliver them to the elementary schools or distribute them to registered families. The backpacks can be filled on Thursdays with distribution on Fridays beginning Sept. 9 and 10. Groups of volunteers of any age are welcome. Please call the Salvation Army at 373-5710 because you can help to make a difference in a child’s life.
RSVP, a program of Senior Resources of Freeborn County, receives some funding through the United Way of Freeborn County, the Minnesota Board on Aging and the Corporation for National and Community Service.
