Darrin and Cherrie Schiltz of Albert Lea are proud to announce the graduation of their daughter, Amanda Marie Schiltz, from the University of Minnesota on May 16, 2010, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
During her four years at the University of Minnesota, Schiltz was very involved with the communities around her. She became a life-long member of Alpha Epsilon Phi sorority and served on their executive board for two years. She served as student treasurer and a student ambassador for three years on the Hillel Student Board. She was an international student mentor and a welcome week and orientation leader for first-year students for two years, served on the Minnesota Programs and Activities Council for two years, and also was an active member of the student advisory board to the president of the university her senior year. Off campus she volunteered at Marcy Open School tutoring seventh and eighth graders and regularly volunteered at local women’s shelters in the Twin Cities. She was inducted as a member of Rho Lambda, a National Sorority Leadership Recognition Society and made the dean’s list multiple semesters. Schiltz also worked full time for the University of Minnesota Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry and received the Outstanding Student Employee Award, which recognizes only the top 10 percent of student employees on campus.
This summer she moved to Detroit, Mich., where she has accepted a two-year teaching position with Teach For America. While there she will be teaching at the University Preparatory Academy Middle School with a focus on language arts.
