WELLS- After winning two straight games and evening their record, the United South Central football team looked to hold a winning record for this first time this season, on homecoming night in Wells, against the Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights.
The Knights had other ideas, though, as quarterback Nate Meixell rushed for a touchdown in the first quarter — the only touchdown of the game — as LC-WM defeated USC 7-0
“We did not come to play,” USC head coach Brad Huse said. “Plain and simple.”
Both teams had issues with turnovers as LCWM had three turnovers, while USC had two.
The Knights offense outgained the Rebels offense 278 to 227 yards.
LC-WM gained 233 of those yards through the air, as Nate Meixell went 17-for-26 with 233 yards.
The Rebels gained 168 yards on the ground, but only managed 59 passing yards as a duo of quarterbacks went 4-of-11.
Chris Melby led the USC offense with 15 rushing attempts for 113 yards, while Tyson Morton had 11 carries for 65 yards.
Kyle Baumann led the Rebels’ receiving corps with two catches for 41 yards.
USC is in action next Friday as they head to Waterville to take on Waterville-Elysian-Morristown Buccaneers, who are the No. 1 ranked team in class 2A.
“Were going to have to come with a positive mindset, we need to come to play,” Huse said. “Were going to have to strap on the helmet, go up there and compete.”
