Editorial: Got a minute to spare behind the wheel?

A lot has been said recently about distracted driving in Minnesota and the effect it has on motorists’ safety, but what about inconsiderate driving? With another winter fast approaching, being considerate behind the wheel can play a part in preventing accidents, too. Consider being considerate.

When stopped at an intersection and waiting to turn, a lot of times the first opportunity to go isn’t the best. If there isn’t a large amount of traffic, waiting a few extra seconds to avoid impeding other drivers is the best option and is usually a matter of safety. This issue is magnified when ice and snow are added to the mix.

What about one slow-moving vehicle that takes several miles to pass another slow-moving vehicle on a divided highway or interstate? If that driver sped up slightly or waited for faster traffic to pass, it would keep other motorists happy and help reduce congestion.

In some instances, a driver’s decision on whether to be considerate or not can be the difference in avoiding an accident. While vehicles merging onto a highway or interstate are usually required to yield, the traffic already on that highway/interstate could sometimes avoid a close call just by moving over one lane. All it takes is a glance over the shoulder and a click of the turn signal.

Another Minnesota winter is on the way, so let’s reduce the inconsiderate driving and step up the Minnesota nice. Slow down and be considerate of other motorists.
