50 years ago – 1960
Named to the Big Nine All-Conference Football Team from Albert Lea High School were Dick Oliphant (backfield), Steve Claybourn (backfield), Tom Suthers (guard), Jeff Brooke (tackle), Del Bosacker (center) and Gary Jacobsen (end).
Ed Stalker, Glenville High School basketball coach, greeted four returning letter winners for the 1959-60 season. They were seniors Bob Machacek and Bob Farris, junior Glen Jensen and sophomore Doug Cipra.
ALHS quarterback Dick Oliphant was named to the WCCO All – Star Defensive Football Team.
Named to the All-Middle Eight Conference Football Team from Wells High School were Ron Feist (end), Dan Roberts (halfback), Mark Kuechenmeister (fullback), Ron Zielie (end) and Bill Uggen (quarterback).
25 years ago – 1985
The Wells-Easton High School girls basketball team defeated Mountain Lake in their season opening game 48-47. W-E was led by Colleen Stevermer with 16 points and Michele Yonkey with 15.
The ALHS girls basketball team, behind 12 points each by Jana Hellie and Julie Leininger, defeated Fairmont 55-41 in their opening game.
The ALHS boys basketball team opened their season with a 62-56 victory over Fairmont. The Tigers were led in scoring by Mike Peterson with 16 points, Greg Deyak with 14, Collin Moriaty with 11 and Steve Dittrich with 10.
Named to the All-Border East All-Conference Football Team were Chris Eaton, Chad Goerish, Terry Hintz and Jon Olson from Kiester-Walters, David Schultz, Doug Christopherson, Rick Redman and Chris Stenzel from Freeborn, Jon Larson, Ross Thompson and Eric Sheehan from Emmons, Kevin Newman and Kent Klocek from Alden-Conger.
10 years ago – 2000
The Albert Lea Tribune 2000 All-Area Football Coach of the Year was Brent Schimek of United South Central and Alex Drescher of Alden-Conger as Player of the Year. Named to the All-Area team were Nick Cunningham, Andy Davis and Mike Peterson from ALHS, Alex Drescher, Ben Drescher, Heath Reindal, Paul Scrabeck and Derek Thorson from Alden-Conger, Paul Kleven and Seth Stadheim, from Glenville-Emmons, Zack Jacobson, Chris Matthies, Tony Schlaak and Jens Wyrum from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva, Scott Gaskill, Matt Hauan, Brad Helgeson, Garret Johnson and Kevin Stensrud from Lake Mills, Brad Brunsvold, Nathan Loberg, Justin Nerlien, Tim Ouverson, Blake Palmer, Josh Reindl, David Reyerson and Gabe Vargas.
