50 years ago – 1960
• The Albert Lea High School basketball team opened their Big Nine Conference season with a 48-44 win over Owatonna. Lowell Syverson scored 21 points and Dick Oliphant 11 points for the Tigers.
• In the opening game of the City Recreation Basketball League, the Cabin Bar defeated the Aragon 52-36. Dave Long scored 15 points for Cabin and Zeke Christianson 14 points for the Aragon.
• Tom Brown of the Minnesota Gophers football team was named the Associated Press Lineman of the Year.
• The Glenville Trojan basketball team defeated Emmons 62-51. Doug Cipra scored 28 points and Bob Farris 11 points for the Trojans. The Eagles were led by Bob Berg with 24 points and Curt Honsey with 17 points.
• The Alden High School basketball team defeated Ellendale 37-35. Duane Tiede scored 12 points for Alden and Ellendale was led by Larry Pence with 16 points.
25 years ago – 1985
• The ALHS girls basketball team improved to 3-2 for the season with a 56-34 victory over Faribault. Albert Lea was led by Julie Leininger with 16 points.
• Barb Wedin scored 17 points and Pam Dulas 14 points for Alden-Conger in their 53-41 win over Glenville. Mary Trytten scored 17 points for Glenville.
• Emmons defeated Elmore 50-47 in overtime. Jon Larson scored 23 points and Ross Thompson 11 points for Emmons.
• Kelly Lageson scored 17 points and Stacy Wallace and Tina Wangsnes 16 points each to lead the Raiders to a 59-43 victory over New Richland-Hartland. Lageson and Wangsness each had 16 rebounds. The Cardinals were led by Julie Hendrickson with 18 points and Michelle Thompson with 12 points.
10 years ago – 2000
• In the first basketball game played in the new high school gym, the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team defeated Faribault 66-64. Nick Cunningham scored 22 points and Chris Rebelein and Josh Ladwig had 11 points each for the Tigers.
• The Albert Lea wrestling team defeated Faribault 29-25. Winning matches for the Tigers were Josh Hansen (103), Brandon Klukow (112), Adam Elseth (125), Ryan Howell (145), Wyatt Reyerson (152), Justin Krueger (160) and Adam Lares (heavyweight).
