Eighth-grade classes at Southwest Middle School are having a great year in Family and Consumer Sciences. The class is offered for one quarter with a focus on relevant, hands-on learning and lifelong skills that every student needs to know.
Nutritional skills are emphasized. After researching the Food Guide Pyramid, the class determined the number of servings as well as serving sizes. They practiced reading food product labels and compared various products for the nutritional values.
To see a serving size, the class measured foods and had samples. They also practiced their measuring skills during cooking labs, menu planning and writing recipes. Several activities related to food safety and sanitation were completed during their nutrition unit.
The classes will end the quarter using the Baby-Think-It over simulators. We discuss the ages and stages for child development.
