Four injured, calves die after Lake Mills fire

LAKE MILLS, Iowa — Four people were treated for smoke inhalation and an estimated half dozen calves died Wednesday afternoon after a fire at J & R Livestock southwest of Lake Mills, Iowa.
Lake Mills Fire Chief Dave Anderson said firefighters received a call about the fire at 21134 440th St., near Lake Mills, at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The fire was in a hoop barn that had small sheds inside for calves.
Anderson said the fire is believed to have started from a heat lamp.
Three workers, who tried to rescue the calves were transported by Lake Mills ambulance to Albert Lea Medical Center where they were treated for smoke inhalation. Another person was taken to the Lake Mills clinic to also be treated.
Anderson said the four people have since been released.
Their names have not been released.
J & R Livestock declined to comment Thursday.
