The Freeborn American Legion Auxiliary started the new auxiliary year off by meeting on Sept. 18. After opening the meeting with the auxiliary pledge, they draped the charter in memory of Rose Honstad.
The secretary’s report was given and approved. The treasurer’s report was given and approved. The Junior Conference Assessment, the National Candidates Assessment and the bonding fee were bills that needed paying. A motion was made and seconded that these bills should be paid by the treasurer. A check was also given to the Community Sewing Group for supplies as they get their new sewing year underway.
The group started with the old business. Sandy reported on how the poppy sales had gone during the month of May. Many businesses and individuals donated to this very worthwhile fund. The amount collected was $433.51. This money will be given to various auxiliary programs to help veterans.
Next for old business was how the bake/no bake sale went. This had been held during the month of June along with Freeborn Day. The total amount of profit was $336. There was a small discussion concerning if they will follow the same format next June. This will be discussed and decided in the spring.
For new business, they discussed and set the dates for the following events. The Community Coffee Time was held on Nov. 20. This is an event where they invite the public to join them for coffee, juice and pastries of many varieties free of charge. They would like to meet the new people in town and the surrounding communities.
Next on the agenda was the Christmas Potluck/Bingo Party. This was held along with the coming of Santa and the lighting of the hospice tree. The date for this was set for Dec. 5.
Finally they discussed and set the date for their annual Soup and Pie supper. The date selected was Jan. 15, 2011. The serving will start at 4 p.m. More details will follow for these events.
Community Sewing Group met on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. This followed the exercise class that started at 9 a.m. The delicious potluck always follows the sewing.
Checking to see how the membership goal is coming along, it was announced that they have 50 paid senior and four paid juniors. There are just six left to renew their memberships.
Members present were told to put on their thinking caps as to who are the students in the Junior class in the area that would be eligible to be Girls State and Boys State candidates. Several names were mentioned. This information will be given to the Girls State chair person.
Some of our funds were dispersed to the department president’s projects, to the $5 bill shower, to the Christmas Gift Shop and to the ALA Hospital. It was decided that they already give to the district president’s projects.
With no other business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned. The next meeting was on Oct. 16 at 9 a.m. at the Freeborn Legion Hall.
