Down by as many as 16 points to Red Wing in the second half, the Albert Lea boys’ basketball team made 5-of-7 three pointers down the stretch to tie the game with a chance to win on the road.

Silas Randall’s shot with seconds left missed but Kyle Ooms grabbed the offensive rebound and scored with 1/2 second left in the game.

After giving up five Wingers’ (1-2, 1-1 Section 1AAA) three pointers in the first half, the Tigers (1-0, 1-0) held them to just two in the second half, allowing themselves to slowly come back.

“We weren’t contesting the three-point shot,” Tigers head coach Lucas Kruescher said. “At half, we changed how we defended the three.”

Tyler Wichmann led the Tigers with 16 points on three 3 pointers. Ooms had 10 points and eight rebounds, and Alik Smed chipped in 14 points.

The Tigers shot 40 percent on the night and held the Wingers to just 36 percent shooting. The Tigers also committed just eight turnovers.

Kruescher said that everyone who played scored and that the win was a good team effort.

The Tigers play again at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Rochester Century (1-0).
