Annika Smed, a 2008 graduate of Albert Lea High School, is trying out for the USA national volleyball team.

Smed will join teammate Devin Trefz at the tryout in Colorado on Feb. 25-27.

Smed, an outside hitter for the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux, will try out as a libero because despite being six feet tall, she would be a relatively short hitter at the international level.

Smed said the ultimate goal is to play in the Olympics but members of the team also play in other tournaments.

Smed was a four-time letterwinner in volleyball at ALHS and was twice named Big Nine All-Conference.

She was named co-Big Nine Player of the Year during her junior season and Tribune All-Area first team her senior season.
