Tigers take 2

Coming on an impressive weekend tournament in Rochester, the Albert Lea wrestling team hosted on Thursday their second triangular of the season.
The Tigers opened the triangular by beating the Rochester Mayo Spartans 60- 13 before topping a scrappy Waseca Bluejay’s team 59-17 in the evening’s third match.
Larry Goodnature, the Tigers head coach, was pleased with how his team performed in the Minnesota Christmas Tournament over the weekend, as Albert Lea placed seven wrestlers in the top eight, and hoped those results carried over to Thursday’s duals.
Against Mayo, the Tigers received falls from Dakota Wangsness, Garrett Wangsness, Spencer Carstens, Tristan Westerlund, Jordan Nielsen, Dylan Anderson, Carter Kortan, Conner Kortan and Caleb Gaudian en route to the 47-point win.
The Tigers’ Lucas Hansen beat Brady Nelson 8-3 at 125 pounds and Caleb Kolodge edged Mayo’s Marcus McKinley 13-12 at 145 pounds.
The Tigers forfeited at heavyweight.
Waseca forfeited at six weight classes in both matches, but rallied to beat Mayo in the triangular’s second match as the Tigers watched the Bluejays pin the Spartans wrestlers one by one.
The Bluejays put up a good fight against the Tigers as well, but spotted Albert Lea too many points to make a run at an upset.
Carstens wrestled first for the Tigers at 130 pounds and was pinned by the Bluejays’ Tanner Peherson.
Trey Hable pulled off a gutsy 3-1 win over No. 5-ranked Zach Gehloff at 145 pounds.
After a long scoreless stretch, Hable pulled ahead 3-0 and gave up only one point to the frustrated Gehloff before an injury threatened the match with under 20 seconds left in the third period.
After being thrown out of bounds, Hable grimaced in pain while clutching his right knee. While being tended to by an athletic trainer and coaches, Hable was given an injury timeout and the Waseca coaching staff disputed how much time was left in the match.
Waseca argued for 22 seconds to be put onto the clock but the referee decided on 16 seconds, and Hable was able to hold off Gehloff for the win.
“That was a big win for him,” Goodnature said, of Hable. “I’m glad we got the chance to put those two (wrestlers) together. It was a big confidence builder.”
The Tigers then picked up two consecutive falls from Dalton Westerlund and Cory Hansen, before Carter Kortan dropped a 10-2 decision to Waseca’s No. 3-ranked Brandon Pederson.
Albert Lea’s Connor Kortan pinned Michael Hayes at 189 pounds and the Tigers’ Gaudian and Alex Nielsen lost at the final two weight classes.
“We scrapped with them and played hard,” Goodnature said, of the match against Waseca. “It was a good outing for us.”
The Tigers wrestle next at the 64-team Rumble on the Red Championships on Wednesday and Thursday in Fargo, N.D.
