Woman airlifted after Monday crash

NORTHWOOD, Iowa — A 34-year-old woman was injured Monday evening after a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 65 north of Northwood, Iowa.

According to a Worth County Sheriff’s Office news release, the woman was transported by Mercy Air Life to Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa, after the crash.

Her name and condition have not been released.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reported Brandon Hauge, 31, of Northwood, was southbound on Highway 65 about a quarter mile south of 500th Street, when he drifted over the center line.

Hauge attempted to swerve back into his own lane and lost control, the newspaper states. A northbound vehicle, driven by Benito Zapata-Gutierrez, 33, of Austin, attempted to avoid the southbound vehicle, but the two automobiles collided head-on.

The crash took place just after 5:30 p.m.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, both Hauge and Zapata-Gutierrez were treated at the scene and released. The woman was the passenger of the Zapata-Gutierrez vehicle.

The crash is still under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting at the scene were the Northwood Police Department, Northwood Fire and Rescue, Mason City Fire Department Ambulance, Mercy Air Life and the Union Pacific Railroad.
