MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis firefighter who was widely praised for her heroism after the Interstate 35W bridge collapse is retiring because of accumulated injuries.

The City Council approved a $113,000 workers’ compensation settlement Friday for Shanna Hanson. Her multiple work-related injuries cut short her career after 19 years.

Hanson was off duty when the bridge collapsed in 2007. But she grabbed gear and plunged into the Mississippi River to search for survivors in submerged cars. The fire captain was among the rescuers thanked by then-First Lady Laura Bush.

Hanson’s most recent injuries were suffered while fighting a 2009 fire.

Her departure comes as the City Council prepares to trim its ranks of firefighters to save money. Union officials warn that the move would leave departments understaffed.
