NORTHWOOD, Iowa — A contingent of three disc golfers got up early on Saturday morning, put on a lot of winter garments, then drove three hours from Cedar Rapids to Northwood.

Champion Drew Detert of Cedar Rapids makes a putt Saturday during the Northwood Ice Bowl, which raised money and food for a local food shelf.

Of them, Drew Detert won the Northwood Ice Bowl and Kurt Conrad tied for second place.

Bill Orozco of Mason City, Iowa, also tied second place.

Play in winter is unlike other seasons. Players know they won’t have the best footing, so they must use upper body form. They know a disc that dives down into the snow is more likely to be lost, which incurs a one-throw penalty, so they work even harder than in other seasons at keeping the discs level, perhaps even to benefit from skipping on a slippery surface.

And they must wear winter outfits that keep them warm and dry but don’t cause them to sweat too much inside. For every shot, the throwing-hand glove comes off (see photos). After the shot, they get the hand warm again.

Matt Sime of Alden cans a putt Saturday at the Northwood Ice Bowl while his dog watches.

Divisions were determined after the first round of play. Brian Wells of Rochester won the Advanced division; Tim Ouverson of Northwood won in the Intermediate division.

Mark Skellenger of Northwood organized the second annual Northwood Ice Bowl. It raised funds and food items for the Worth County food shelf.
